RLC to offer computer workshop class for small businesses

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - Rend Lake College Community and Corporate Education announced they will be offering a computer workshop class designed to help make personal or small business accounting easier.

The classes, "Beginning Quick-Books," is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. on Thursdays, Feb. 2-23. They will be held at the RLC MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon. RLC says this is a one-credit-hour class and the registration fee is $173.

"Beginning Quick-Books" will focus on how to use Quick-Books. RLC says participants will receive hands-on practice using the features that are used on a regular basis. Those attending will learn how to set up a chart of accounts, reconcile checking accounts, create and print invoices, receipts and statements. According to RLC, how to track payables, inventory and receivables will also be covered as well as creating estimates and generating reports.

"Walk Across Illinois Challenge" encourages residents to get healthier

(KFVS) - The "Walk Across Illinois Challenge" was announced today and encourages Illinoisans to walk 167 miles during 2012 to improve their own health.

Former Chicago Bears and Chicago Bulls players, schoolteachers and students joined Governor Quinn to launch the program, which is designed to help Illinois residents get healthier by adding a half-mile of walking to their daily routines, which is roughly the distance across Illinois from Rock Island on the Mississippi River to Chicago on Lake Michigan.

Residents can accept the "Walk Across Illinois Challenge" by visiting www.WalkAcrossIllinois.org, where they can register and log their miles.

Lincoln Museum offers free school field trips for Feb.

(KFVS) - The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum is offering free school field trips during the month of February for Abraham Lincoln's 203rd birthday.

At the museum, students can see ghosts come to life on stage, watch TV coverage of the 1860 presidential election, roam through the Lincoln White House, experience booming cannons in a Civil War battle and come face to face with original Lincoln artifacts.

Regular admission to the museum is $12 for adults and $6 for children ages five to 15.

All field trips to the museum are booked through the Springfield Convention and Visitor's Bureau. You can click here to book a trip.

Concert, Red Cross program in Mt. Vernon

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - A couple of events in Mt. Vernon on Thursday, Jan. 26 include a concert and Red Cross program.

The C.E. Brehm Memorial Library will host a concert by Magilla Shuwall at 6:30 p.m. The singer and song writer will play selections from his latest album, "A Place in the Hills."

Also on Thursday, there will be Discover the Red Cross in Action at Veterans Park Community Building, 800 South 27th, at 4 p.m.

At the program, you can learn more about life-saving work, hear from visionary leaders, as well as personal stories of those who have been impacted by the Red Cross programs and services.

Inmate escapes from Franklin County Jail, recaptured short time later

MOUNT VERNON, IL (KFVS)-

 

A Jefferson County man escaped from the Franklin County Jail for a little less than an hour.

Officers say this 24-year-old Justin Peak of Mount Vernon escaped after he was left unsecured in a common area of the jail after telling deputies he was going to post his bail.

Franklin County Sheriff Don Jones says Peak was able to leave the jail through an unsecured door.

Peak was out for about 45 minutes before deputies caught up to him.

Illinois Supreme Court to allow cameras in courtrooms

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (KFVS)-

For years Illinois has been just one of 14 states that don't allow cameras during criminal trials. But that will soon change. The Illinois Supreme Court announced a new experimental policy allowing cameras in trial court.

Illinois News Broadcasters Association President Jennifer Fuller says for years they have advocated for the use of cameras and tape recorders during criminal trials.

"I was shocked when I saw it but so excited," Fuller said.

Fuller is taking about the order from the Illinois Supreme Court that now allows cameras likes ours, inside criminal trials. Which Fuller says will help journalists better share what's gone on inside the courtroom.

Students can still apply for annual scholarship program

(KFVS) - Students can still apply for the annual Charter Student Scholarship program.

The scholarships will be awarded to outstanding high school students who will graduate at the end of the 2011-2012 school year.

Applications are available at local high schools as well as online by clicking here. They are due March 30, 2012 and Charter will award up to 10 $1,000 scholarships at the end of the 2011-2012 school year.
