Local blood drives, American Red Cross offers online rewards program

(KFVS) - This fall the American Red Cross will be offering the Red Cross Racing, an online rewards program for blood donors in the Missouri-Illinois region.

The Red Cross says after their donation, donors can go to RedCrossRacing.com and report their donation. Members will be awarded Donor Rewards points for each donation, which will be exchanged for exclusive racing merchandise such as: die-cast cars, t-shirts and golf bags. Donors can also convert these points into Best Buy Reward Zone points, up to 800 Reward Zone points for each donation.

Cash Dash Event for Unclaimed Property

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The Illinois State Treasurer will hold Cash Dash events in Southern Illinois.

At the events, State Treasurer Dan Rutherford will help residents determine if the state is holding any money or unclaimed property that belongs to them.

On Tuesday, September 13, a Cash Dash event will be held at Mt. Vernon Municipal West at 200 Potomac Boulevard.

Rend Lake College receives AmeriCorps grant

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn announced Saturday that Rend Lake College is among 32 organizations in Illinois have received AmeriCorps grants from the Serve Illinois Commission.

In honor of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, Quinn says he has proclaimed Sept. 11, 2011 as a day of service and remembrance.

Quinn says the announcement of grants to support more than 1,100 AmeriCorps members is part of the his call for citizens all across Illinois to commit to community service. 

"Citizen service is essential to strengthening and addressing challenges in communities throughout Illinois," Governor Quinn said. "As we reflect and remember September 11, 2001, we must reaffirm our commitment to service for our great county. These AmeriCorps members will meet pressing local needs and strengthen our communities as they develop civic and leadership skills will last a lifetime." 

About 550 jobs available in Jefferson County

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - About 550 jobs will be available in Mt. Vernon in the next six to nine months.

State Senator John. O. Jones ( R-Mt. Vernon) says there is an immediate labor shortage in Mt. Vernon and Jefferson County due to expansion at Continental Tire and medical facilities.

The positions include:

  • 400 tire builders
  • 70 warehousing positions
  • 20 medical professionals
  • 20 electrical/welding professionals
  • 11 governmental/summer help
  • Limited executive-level vacancies

Most positions start out at an average $35,000 a year. The medical and electrical fields have varying hourly salaries and most are full-time positions.

Jones says economic development officials are reaching out to bring in a skilled work force and are cooperating with local educational facilities to keep local talent in the area, as well.

Opdyke man pleads guilty to meth charges

JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The U.S. Attorney for the southern district of Illinois, Stephen R. Wigginton, announced Thursday an Opdyke, Ill. man pleaded guilty on September 7 to one count of possession of pseudoephedrine knowing it would be used to make meth.

Dennis Raymond Heck, 47, pleaded guilty in the U.S. District Court at Benton, Ill. According to Wigginton, the violation took place around August 2009 through July 2010 in Jefferson and Hamilton Counties.

Wigginton says Heck's sentencing hearing is set for January 5 at 10:30 a.m.

Heck admitted to the court that he would get pseudophedrine pills for use in making meth. This offense carries a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000 or both.

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - A 9/11 Memorial Ceremony will be on Saturday, September 10 on the north lawn of the Jefferson County Courthouse.

The ceremony will include Dan Knox as the 10 a.m. keynote speaker. Music will be provided by the MVTHS band.
