Kiwanis Fun Day bike ride

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The Kiwanis Fun Day bike ride will be Saturday, August 20.

The ride will start and finish at Walgreens Distribution Center located at 5100 Lake Terrace N.E. from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration will start at 7 a.m.

The bicycle ride will include 12, 30, 60 or 100 miles.

Local students named to Southeast's Dean's List

Local students named to Southeast's Dean's List

JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - Southeast Missouri State University has named 897 students to their Dean's List for the 2011 summer sessions.

Students named to the list earned at least a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale and finished at least six degree credit hours over the summer.

Students from Mt. Vernon on the list include:

Annual balloon festival

Annual balloon festival

CENTRALIA, IL (KFVS) - The annual balloon festival will be August 19 through 21 at Centralia Foundation Park.

The festival will be from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The park is located at Pleasant Street and Highway 161 East.

The festival features 40 hot air balloons, races and glows, main stage entertainment and more.

Admission is $3 for adults and children six and under will be free.

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The Movie in the Park event at Veterans Park on Friday, August 19 will be "Charlotte's Web."

You can watch the movie on the outdoor screen for free.

Two killed in late-night motorcycle crash

Two people were killed in a late-night motorcycle crash Saturday in Mt. Vernon.

According to Coroner Eddie Joe Marks, he was notified around 11:49 p.m. of a motorcycle vs. pickup crash at the intersection of State Route 15 and Liebengood Road.

Cassell Stewart, 28, of Mt. Vernon was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:09 a.m. Sunday. A passenger, 29-year-old Autumn Tittman was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital where she later died at 12:23 a.m. Sunday., Marks said.

According to the coroner, no alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash.

The driver of the pickup truck was not injured, Marks said.

Police are still investigating the crash.

Good Samaritan Regional Health Center hosts community blood drive

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The Good Samaritan Regional Health Center will host a community blood drive on Friday, August 19 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The blood drive will be in classroom one at the Sister Joanne Memorial Building located at 605 North 12th Street.

Junior champions crowned at the Ill. State Fair

ILLINOIS (KFVS) - The Illinois State Fair crowns the First Grand Champions in the Junior Livestock Show.

The new champions include:

  • 1st place - James Banas, 13, of the Saratoga 4-H Club won with his Cornish Cross Trio
  • 2nd place - Sam Shafer, 19, of the Jolly Workers 4-H Club won with his White Pekin Ducks
  • Grand Champion - Kenzie Schlipf, 13, of the Dunlap Dynamite 4-H Club won with her New Zealand Rabbit Meat Pen
  • Reserve Grand Champion - Mallory Munster, 18, of the LeRoy 4-H

The Illinois State Fair will be Friday, August 12 through Sunday, August 21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

A schedule of events will include:

  • Friday, August 12 - County Fair and Horse Racing Day. More than 70 county fair queens and 105 fairs and expositions from across the state are represented at the fair.
