Gathering of Quilts Exhibition in Mt. Vernon

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The 22nd Annual Gathering of Quilts exhibition will feature quilts made by the Cedarhurst Quilters.

Quilts will be displayed in the Regenhardt Gallery at Shrode Art Center as well as the Beal Grand Corridor Gallery inside the Mitchell Museum, both located at Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mt. Vernon, Ill.

Several quilts in the show tell a family story or the design honors their heritage or the memory of a loved one, along with many other wonderful textile talents.

The exhibit will be open August 6 through October 16. A Preview Reception will be held Saturday, August 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with quilters sharing their experiences and history of quilting.

A special bed turning program will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 14 in the Beal Grand Corridor at Mitchell Museum and feature quilts made by charter members of the Cedarhurst Quilters.

Hours for viewing the quilt exhibitions are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

National Night Out at Veterans Park

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The National Night Out will be Tuesday, August 2 at Veterans Park from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

You can join the Mt. Vernon Police Department for free food and activities.

There will be demonstrations by K9 and Bicycle Patrol. McGruff the Crime Dog and Elroy the Elk will be there.

Black powder gun, tomahawk presentation

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The Jefferson County Historical Village will host a black powder gun and tomahawk presentation on Sunday, July 31.

Retired District 80 Superintendent Dr. Kevin Settle will present the event for free. It will be from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Game day at the library

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The C.E. Brehm Memorial Library will host a game day on Saturday, July 30.

The free event will include board games, miniature games, card games and role playing games.

It will include live island music and caribbean food.

The event will be limited to 80 people.

Postal Service considers closing two offices in Jefferson Co.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The U.S. Postal Service has released a list of 3,700 post offices across the country that could be shut down to help save money.

The Postal Service introduced Tuesday the Village Post Office as a potential retail replacement option for affected communities around the nation. Village Post Offices will be operated by local businesses and would offer popular postal products and services.

"The Village Post Office will offer another way for us to meet our customers' needs." said Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe.

"The Postal Service of the future will be smaller, leaner and more competitive and it will continue to drive commerce, serve communities and deliver value," added Donahoe in a press release Tuesday.

Several locations in Jefferson County are on the list the close retail offices.
