Waltonville roads closed, levee breached

Heavy rains overnight and Sunday have caused road closures and a levee breach in Waltonville.

Illinois Hwy. 148 is closed going into Waltonville due to weather related flooding, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

Ill. Hwy. 148 road-block detours are set up at Spruce Lane and E. Bonnie Rd., according to a press release by Sheriff Roger Mulch.

According to Benton Fitzgerald with Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency, there was a levee breach at the Waltonville Lake Dam.

Keith Smiley, IDOT Engineer District 9 says, there is a hole in the dam 8 feet in diameter.

Fitzgerald said Sunday morning if the levee fails it would be "catastrophic". That's why crews took a back-hoe and drained the water out of the lake around 3 p.m. Sunday.

The lake sits on the south side of town so there is no danger to residents in town, said Smiley.

Storms, flooding cause damage in the Heartland

High winds damaged several buildings in St. Francois County overnight while Kentucky and Illinois residents dealt with flooding into Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in St. Louis, Police reported a "possible tornado" around 11:12 p.m. Saturday just north of Leadington.

Officers say 2 large billboards and debris was blown over U.S. Route 67. Wind gusts were reported at 65 mph with 1" hail.

According to police, around 11:14 p.m. Saturday a funnel cloud was also reported between Desloge and Bonne Terre in St. Francois County.

The St. Francois Sheriff's Department reported no known injuries late Sunday morning.

Strong storms Sunday afternoon caused trees to come down in Van Buren in Carter County, Mo., according to police reports.

In Illinois, heavy rains caused localized flooding overnight.
