Take a “walk” on the moon program to be held at Rend Lake

INA, IL (KFVS) - You can join the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Park Rangers and Rend Lake College Professor, Gregg Hollmann for an imaginary “walk" on the moon.

Hollmann will explain the phases of the moon – using Oreo cookies, then as the sun goes down participants will go outside to observe the moon through binoculars and a telescope.

The program will be held at the Rend Lake Visitor Center from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday, June 22. Bring the entire family and join them as they discover some new secrets about our nearest neighbor – the moon.

ISP releases Union Pacific railroad crossing detail

(KFVS) - The Union Pacific Railroad, the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies are partnering in an effort to lower fatalities at railroad crossings in the Illinois State Police District 13 area.

Even one of these tragic events is too many. Highway-rail crash statistics for 2012 indicate that Illinois had 89 crashes at public crossings. Twenty five people were killed and another 34 seriously injured. Illinois has over 7,300 miles of track with 7,780 public crossings and 4,536 private crossings.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Thursday Night Live at Cedarhurst will be June 20.

Each Thursday throughout the summer, Cedarhurst stays open to the pubic until 8 p.m. Food and beer/wine concessions will be available for purchase, plus different activities such as live music, outdoor yoga or family art activities.

African American Heritage Committee Annual Gala June 15

MOUNT VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The Jefferson County African American Heritage Committee Annual Gala will be June 15.

The gala will be at the Holiday Inn at 5:30 p.m. It will include entertainment, scholarships, awards and keynote speaker.

Admission is $25 for adults and $15 for children.

(KFVS) - The Parade of Quilts will be at the Southern Illinois Art and Artisans Center now through July 14.

Each year the Artisans Center offers a display of unique art quilts created by members of the Illinois Artisans Program. These quilts encompass traditional and modern designs and offer a lively look into the art of contemporary quilt making.

The Center is located at 14967 Gun Creek Trail in Whittington.

Crop insurance information meeting June 13 in Ina

INA, IL (KFVS) - A crop insurance information meeting will be held Thursday, June 13 at 1 p.m. at Rend Lake College in Ina.

Organizers say the location was moved from the Theater to Applied Science 102 (New Ag Building).

Representatives from USDA Risk Management, University of Illinois Extension and local Crop Insurance representatives will be on hand to answer questions regarding preventive planting, failed crops, and other insurance considerations due to weather related issues.
