Emergency preparedness, earthquake safety video game

JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - A project commissioned by the Illinois Terrorism Task Force and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency was designed to teach children disaster preparedness and response strategies using a video game.

"The Day the Earth Shook" was developed by the Electronic Visualization Lab at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications and the Center for Public Safety and Justice- Institute of Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The game focuses on preparing for an earthquake like one that could occur along the New Madrid or Wabash Valley Seismic Zones in Southern Illinois.

Kids' matinee at Granada Center

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The Granada Center for the Performing Arts will host a Classic Kids' Matinee on Saturday, May 14.

The matinee will be showing "Spongebob Squarepants" at the center located at 108 North 9th Street. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. and the movie starts at 2 p.m.

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The Jefferson County branch of the NAACP will have their pancake breakfast on Saturday, May 14.

The breakfast will be at Veterans Park Community Building located at 800 South 27th Street. It will be from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Elsenpeter Marionettes to perform The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The Elsenpeter Marionettes will perform The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at the C.E. Brehm Memorial Library on Tuesday, May 10.

The show will be at 1 p.m. and is in honor of the 110th anniversary of the book's publication.

The Iris Farm annual flower display, sale

WAYNE CITY, IL (KFVS) - The Iris Farm will hold their annual flower display and sale May 1-21.

The Iris Farm is located two miles west of Wayne City off Route 15. It will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Sundays.

Winners announced for Easter Coloring Contest at Tyler Toyota

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - Tyler Toyota announced the winners of their Easter Coloring Contest recently.

Macy Sanchez, 9, of Benton Elementary School and Kennadi Niles, 7, of Woodlawn Elementary School won Easter baskets in the contest.

According to the dealership, there were over 200 entries in the contest.

On Saturday, April 23 Tyler's will host another Easter event. From 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. you can meet the Easter Bunny.

The United Methodist Childrens Home will also be there Saturday with a bake sale.

Spring Concert at Rend Lake College
