Hospice of Southern Ill. offers free grief camp for children

Hospice of Southern Ill. offers free grief camp for children

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The Hospice of Southern Illinois will be hosting "Making Connections," a free children's grief camp on April 28 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Presbyterian Church.

The hospice says since it began in 2004, the camp has been a beneficial experience for more than 200 children and adolescents, ages 5-17, of Southern Illinois who are grieving the loss of a friend or loved one.

According to the hospice, when a child loses someone they often experience secondary losses that are not always acknowledged in their lives. They might move away from a home, have to attend a new school, notice the empty chair at dinner and miss their confidante. “Making Connections” with others can be an empowering experience for a child who has already lost so much.

Mt. Vernon hospital announces 4 Leap Day births

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - Good Samaritan Regional Health Center says an armful of babies "leaped" into the world Wednesday, Feb. 29.

During the course of Wednesday – the once-every-four-years 29th day of February – four babies were delivered at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center. Nurses and staff had prepared for their unique arrivals by decorating bassinets in green with frog and bunny “leap” themes.

“This was really fun,” said Stephanie Maines, OB/Nursery Director. “Once we started discussing ways to celebrate Leap Day babies with their families, everyone perked up and shared plenty of great ideas.”

Staff members created frog and bunny themes out of construction paper and other safe materials, designing each bassinet to announce each child as a Leap Day baby. The gift shop – operated by the Good Samaritan Regional Health Center Auxiliary – donated plush frogs and bunnies as gifts to the children and their families in recognition of the Feb. 29 births.
