Sheriff: 10-year-old accidentally shot by 7-year-old | News
DIX, IL (KFVS)- A 10-year-old boy died Saturday afternoon after being accidentally shot by a 7-year-old in Jefferson County, Illinois.
According Sheriff Roger Mulch, deputies received the 911 call on Saturday around 3:30 p.m.
When deputies arrived at the scene on Baseline Road in Dix, Mulch says they found the 10-year-old boy lying inside an RV.
The RV is near a wooded area and used as a hunting cabin. It is owned by a Granite City, Illinois family.
Mulch says state police, the Department of Children and Family Services and the Jefferson County coroner were then dispatched to the scene.
Investigators say the 10-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl were inside the vehicle when the 7-year-old picked up a long gun and a round accidentally discharged hitting the 10-year-old.
Autopsy results show it was a tragic accident, according to the sheriff.
Foul play is not suspected at this time.
An investigation by the sheriff's office, the state's attorney, state police and the coroner continues.
