Scholar Bowl season kick-off Oct. 18 at Murphysboro High School

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - The Murphysboro High School Varsity Scholar Bowl team members will host  Mount Vernon, Marion, Salem, Centralia and Carbondale in the opening event of the season at Murphysboro High School  on Thursday, October 18 at 3:45 p.m.

The 14 member team’s starting five will face a broad base of questions that traditionally test knowledge of mathematics, science, literature, history and sometimes the category referred to as miscellaneous  or contemporary topics.

The Murphysboro Scholar Bowl program was started in 1983 by faculty member Gwen Roberts, who coached teams that went to state competion in 1988 and 2008. Roberts retired in 2009, and  Orlan Brown took over the varsity coaching job, and Jen Goode handles duties for the  junior team.

Academic quiz bowls date back to College Bowl, a radio show back in 1953, and eventually moved to television for an 11-year run. Gaining popularity on college campuses, the idea spread to high schools, as a way to encourage competitive recognition in  venues other than sports.
