MOUNT VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The Mount Vernon Police Department says the railroad crossing at 7th Street next to Milano Metals south of the Mt. Vernon Township High School has been closed indefinitely.

Police say the railroad is installing a new tracks and this is causing some heavier than usual traffic east bound on Casey Avenue in the mornings as people are driving to the high school.

They say you may want to consider alternate routes other than Casey Avenue to the “H” parking lot. If you are leaving the “H” lot in the morning when school is about to start, please exit the lot on 7th street and then use Casey Ave. Anyone exiting “H” lot to travel north on 8th street can expect to be held up as traffic is directed East through the stop sign at 8th and Casey.
