Nursing home residents taking a stand in Mt. Vernon

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS)- Nursing home residents in Mt.Vernon are fighting for better medical care in a campaign to draw attention to Medicaid cuts in Illinois.

One group has come up with a way to send a clear message to the governor about the problem.

The nursing home industry has been hit hard in the last few years because of cuts to Medicaid.

Residents are being denied medical services-and in some situations, those nursing homes are footing the medical bills.

To bring attention to the problem, the health care council of Illinois is making stops at nursing homes across the state collecting signatures to deliver to Governor Quinn.

Their first stop was in Mt. Vernon.

The goal is to be in Chicago Sunday with a list of signatures of those effected the most, names of staff and residents who have had to deal with limited care.

One bus rear-ended another bus. The first bus left the scene and began delivering children to their homes.

Seven children were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries. Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Sargent says the children have been released.

were checked out at the school.

The driver of the school bus was cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.

Poshard Foundation distributes $70,000 to 28 agencies serving children in region

CARTERVILLE, IL (KFVS) - With a goal of stamping out child abuse in Southern Illinois, Jo Poshard distributed $70,000 Tuesday at John A. Logan College to 28 different agencies in the region that serve children’s needs.

“This year we were able to give out $70,000 to 28 agencies and we’re very excited about that,” said Jo Poshard with the Poshard Foundation for Abused Children. “We would like to make it much more, but we know that they will use this money to plug the gaps and help create that safety net for the children.”

Poshard is the co-founder of the Poshard Foundation for Abused Children, whose home base is the college. The monies were raised last fall at the foundation’s main fundraiser.

“Our mission is to help abused, neglected and abandoned children here in Southern Illinois,” Poshard said. “Our organization does not receive any state or federal funds to operate. We attempt to provide services and goods that area agencies can’t afford to provide.”

Jefferson County Jail to bring back ICE detainees

The beds in the Jefferson County Justice Center won't remain empty much longer.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS)- The beds in the Jefferson County Justice Center won't remain empty much longer.

The jail has been cleared to bring back Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees.

This is good news for government offices in the county who have been operating for months without any cash flow.

County board Chairman Robert White says the Immigration Customs Enforcement agency removed prisoners from the county detention facility back in December.

White says ICE had been conducting audits.

White says during the medical audit, ICE officials noticed deficiencies concerning documentation on several medical records and started investigating.

White went on to say ICE became concerned with the county's ability to provide medical care to detainees.
