IDPH encourages discussion, testing during National STD Awareness Month

IDPH encourages discussion, testing during National STD Awareness Month

(KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Public Health is encouraging residents to discuss sexual health and get tested during National STD Awareness Month in April.

According to the IDPH, nationwide, there are an estimated 19 million new STD infections annually with nearly half of all cases occurring in young people aged 15 to 24. They say Illinois ranks in the top 10 in the nation for the number of reported cases for the two most common STDs: gonorrhea and chlamydia.

“Most STDs are treatable and many are curable. Early detection through testing is key, and increased screening, especially among high-risk populations, is critical to detect and treat infections, some of which are asymptomatic,” said IDPH Acting Director Dr. Arthur Kohrman. “We are fortunate in Illinois to be able to provide access to comprehensive information about STDs, as well as clinics to get tested.”

Job search party coming to Mt. Vernon

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The 2012 Job Search Party is scheduled for Wednesday, April 18 at the Mt. Vernon Holiday Inn from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Organizers say the event will bring job seekers and employers together.

"This is an exciting opportunity for our community," said Lori Ragland, RLC's Director of Community and Corporate Education. "Employers need good workers and workers need good jobs. This is a prime opportunity for anyone looking for work and any employer looking for help."

Employers will be there from coal mining, manufacturing, machinery, agriculture, law enforcement, health care, sales and staffing agencies.

Because job seekers who attend will have the opportunity to meet recruiters face-to-face, Ragland reminds them to bring several copies of a resume and dress appropriately. She said the event is free for job seekers, and door prizes will be given away.

Spring Wildflowers in Shawnee National Forest featured on national map

(KFVS) - The U.S. Forest Service has released an updated online wildflower map with hundreds of locations on national forests for prime wildflower viewing.

The forest service says the wildflower map includes 317 wildflower viewing areas on National Forest System lands and can be referenced by specific states, individual national forests and geographic regions. They say four of these areas are highlighted on the Shawnee National Forest.

"This updated map provides visitors a quick guide to find locations and best viewing times for the spectacular natural beauty of wild flowers on national forests," said Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell. "This is one more way folks can experience the bounty of natural surroundings."

The map is part of the agency's Celebrating Wildflowers website which includes more than 10,000 plant images and information about the aesthetic, recreational, biological, medicinal and economic values of native plants.
