Illinois State Treasurer reminds victims about flood aid

SPRINGFIELD, IL (KFVS) - With the recent flooding throughout the state, Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford is reminding flood victims that aid is available through the treasurer’s Disaster Recovery Linked Deposit Program.

According Rutherford, the program helps residents, businesses and farmers get low-interest loans to recover from weather-related damage to their property.

After a loan is approved, Rutherford says the state makes a deposit into the financial institution which helps lower the interest rate to the borrower, effectively making the repairs more affordable.

The maximum interest rate for qualifying borrowers is 2.36 percent for a two-year loan and 2.69 percent for a three-year loan for the month of April 2013. The rate is locked in for the duration of the period. The program caps the interest rate at 3 percent for qualified borrowers at participating financial institutions.

Bill Enyart sworn into 113th Congress

WASHINGTON (KFVS) - Congressman Bill Enyart was officially sworn into the 113th Congress by House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH).

On the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives Friday afternoon, Enyart joined his new colleagues in an en masse oath of office. He will hold a community swearing-in in Belleville later this month.

"I am deeply honored to serve as the voice of Southern Illinois in Washington," Congressman Bill Enyart said. "It is a privilege and tremendous responsibility to take on the challenges our families face. Southern Illinois is blessed with a talented workforce, abundant natural resources, and a powerful sense of community. I have every confidence that by working together we can create a strong economic future for all of our families and protect the Southern Illinois way of life we share."

Gov. Quinn to give 2013 Budget Address

(KFVS) - Governor Pat Quinn will be delivering his Fiscal Year 2013 Budget Address on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

Quinn will be speaking at the House Chamber in the Illinois State Capitol at 12 p.m.

The event will be streamed live at www.illinois.gov.

Lt. Gov. Simon to speak at summit, conference

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The Lt. Governor Sheila Simon says she will speak at the East Central Development Corporation's Downstate Economic Summit in Effingham and at the Southern Illinois Volunteerism Conference in Mt. Vernon on Thursday.

According to Simon, she will be voicing her support for President Barack Obama's American Jobs Act and talk about her role as chair of the Governor's Rural Affairs Council. At the conference in Mt. Vernon, she says she will urge the attendees to stay engaged in the communities and talk her involvement with volunteers across the state.

Simon says her office worked with volunteers from the American Red Cross to coordinate emergency response efforts in the aftermath of devastating flooding that swept through Southern Illinois last spring.

Gov. Quinn passes new legislation to protect those with disabilities

JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) Governor Pat Quinn announced Wednesday she signed a legislation to improve the security of Illinois residents with different disabilities using a remotely-activated bracelet.

The bracelet will contact emergency services during a missing persons incident.

“We need to make sure that our most vulnerable citizens can get help when they most need it,” said Governor Quinn. “This measure will greatly help caregivers and emergency personnel respond to someone who needs assistance and return them safely.”

Under the current law, it is a Class A misdemeanor to install or connect an automatic alarm, alarm altering device or mechanical dialer that contacts 911. House Bill 1610 is an exemption for bracelets that can be remotely activated to alert emergency response personnel of a person in need.

The bracelets are activated under the new law are activated upon alert from a missing person's registered caregiver.

Ill. State Treasurer holds press conference on state debt

JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford will hold a press conference to discuss state debt on Monday, May 23.

Rutherford will use the press conference to detail the state's debt in a clearer and more meaningful way. He says he will explain his position toward borrowing and debt..

The conference will be in the Capitol Blue Room in Springfield, Ill. at 1:30 p.m.

According to the office of Rutherford, Illinois is on the verge of a financial disaster because of borrowed dollars and other financial liabilities making the state's credit rating for future borrowing unaffordable and unwise.
