RLC offers Family Trivia Night April 6

MOUNT VERNON, IL (KFVS) - Rend Lake College Community and Corporate Education is offering a trivia night, where parents and children can team up and enjoy an evening of family fun.

"Me & My Buddy Trivia Night" will be held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., Saturday, April 6, at the RLC Historic Schoolhouse on the main campus in Ina. The event will be full of kid-friendly trivia questions. This friendly competition will include trivia categories about music, animals, candy, and much more. Teams of two (one child and one adult) will compete for bragging rights. Dinner, snacks, beverages, and small prizes are included in the registration fee. The registration fee is $20 per team.

RLC offering short-term painting class

MOUNT VERNON, IL (KFVS) - Rend Lake College Community and Corporate Education is offering a short-term painting class on the main campus in Ina.

"Painting Made Easy" will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Mondays, April 15 through May 6. Participants can learn the “One Stroke” painting technique from a certified instructor. This class is for beginners, as well as expert decorative painters, and will teach basic techniques, combination strokes, insider tips, and more. Students will complete their very own masterpiece to take home at the end of class. Supplies will be purchased from the instructor the first night of class for a $15 fee. The registration fee is $50.

RLC offers women’s self-defense, handgun safety course

MOUNT VERNON, IL (KFVS) - Rend Lake College Community and Corporate Education will be offering a class on women’s self-defense and handgun safety at the Rend Lake College MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon.

"Women’s Self-Defense and Handgun Safety" will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, April 20 and 27. This class will focus on basic self-defense skills, safe gun handling, and basic marksmanship. After teaching the types and functions of different handguns, RLC Criminal Justice Instructor Ron Meek and Capt. Jeff Bullard of the Mt. Vernon Police Department will help students learn how to maximize ability to deliver accurate hits with a handgun.  

The class will also cover weapons presentation, ready positions, loading and unloading, malfunction clearances, carry positions, and more. The first session will be held at the RLC MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon in Room 343 and the second session will be held at the police shooting range in Mt. Vernon.

MOUNT VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The Rend Lake College Spring Musical "Into the Woods" will be March 21 through 24 in the RLC Theatre.

The performances will be Thursday through Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Rend Lake College hosts annual student art show

Rend Lake College hosts annual student art show

INA, Ill. - Rend Lake College's Annual Student Art Show will run March 28 through May 3.

The art show will be held in the Learning Resource Center at the college. It will feature work by RLC students and area high school students.

A reception to kick off the show will take place from 6-8 p.m., March 28, in the RLC Theatre Lobby.

Hors d’oeuvres will be served from 6-7 p.m., followed by an awards presentation.

Rep. Bradley encourages students to enter 'Doodle 4 Google' contest

MARION, IL (KFVS) - State Rep. John Bradley (D-Marion) invited local students to participate in Google's "Doodle 4 Google" contest for the opportunity to have their artwork featured on the Google homepage.

Those feature could receive a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology grant from their school.

"The Doodle 4 Google contest is an innovative way to encourage students to demonstrate their creativity," Bradley said. "We have a great many talented students in our community, and I encourage all of them to take advantage of this opportunity to help fund their college education, while supporting their current school at the same time."

Doodles are the fun versions of the Google logo that appear on the Google homepage to recognize special events and people. The theme for this year's contest is "My Best Day Ever..." and students are invited to submit their entries by mail or online by March 22.

ISA to award $53,000 total in college scholarships to Illinois students

(KFVS) -  The Illinois Sheriff's Association announced it will be awarding $53,000 in college scholarships throughout the state of Illinois to students wishing to pursue higher education during the 2013-2014 academic year.

According to the association, the scholarships are to be applied to tuition, books and fees only. The student must be enrolled full-time at a certified institution of higher learning within the state of Illinois.

There will be no restriction on any applicant by reason of race, age, creed, color, sex or national origin. The only limitations are as follows:
