Rend Lake College improves nursing program

Rend Lake College improves nursing program

INA, ILLINOIS (KFVS) - Rend Lake College has dedicated more space to the Ina campus nursing program, and say they have increased fall enrollment by 33 percent.

According to RLC President Terry Wilkerson, the nursing program has experienced growing demand every year. The campus had to increase facilities or risk having to turn away applicants.

The old nursing lab was designed to teach about 45 students in the Practical Nursing Program. The program has expanded to double the LPN capacity and add the Associate Degree nursing program. The programs have 160 available slots and are full every year.

The construction project moved classrooms and lab space from the Science Building to the first and second floors of the Learning Resource Center. The move doubled the amount of classroom space available to students and improved the lab environment.

Illinois students now required to get whooping cough vaccine

Illinois students now required to get whooping cough vaccine

ILLINOIS (KFVS) - A rise in whooping cough caused new vaccine requirements for Illinois sixth and ninth graders.

Illinois sixth and ninth grade students will now be required to have the Tdap vaccine before entering school for the 2012-2013 year.

The Tdap vaccine immunizes against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough. Students will be required to show proof of receiving the vaccine, have an appointment scheduled to get it, or an approved medical or religious exemption on file. Students who do not meet this requirement will not be allowed to attend school.

Whooping cough has been on the rise this year in Illinois and across the country. Medical experts have found that the disease is particularly on the rise among pre-teen and teens. Combatting this is the reason for the new requirements.
